Health Classes

St. Francis Health is focused on the well-being of our patients and visitors. To provide the best patient experience, we have developed a number of educational classes and support groups covering a variety of health topics. We invite you to participate as often as you wish!

To register for a class online, simply click on the heading of the class. If you would prefer to register over the phone, please contact 888.365.0440 to speak to our call center. Birthing/Maternity/Parenting Classes

Baby Basics 

Learn how to bathe, diaper, swaddle and soothe your new baby. This class includes what to expect with a newborn the first few days and what to expect during your stay at the NewLife Center at St. Francis Health. This class also welcomes grandparents at no cost, with the enrollment of an expectant parent.

*To get to the class, please park in the parking garage located at 7th and Mulvane. Take the 2nd floor skywalk across to the 2nd floor of the hospital and follow the signs to the class.

Baby Safety

Learn how to use and install your child safety seat correctly, how to baby proof your house and keep your baby safe. Also learn the latest information on SIDS prevention. Grandparents are also welcome to attend at no cost with the enrollment of an expectant parent.

*To get to the class, please park in the parking garage located at 7th and Mulvane. Take the 2nd floor skywal across to the lobby area. From there, follow the signs to the classroom.

Baby's First Year Feeding & Wellness

Learn what, when, and how to feed your baby the first year and receive information on food allergies. Also learn what to keep in your medicine cabinet and when to call the doctor, how to take a temperature adn what to do when your baby is sick. Grandparents are also welcome to attend at no cost with the enrollment of an expectant parent.

Body Benefits Prenatal & Post-Natal Exercise 

Keep fit during and after your pregnancy! This class is an hour of low impact aerobics with toning and strengthening muscles to help you prepare for your labor and delivery, and get you back in shape after delivery.Please bring a physician's/Nurse Practitioner's note for permission to exercise. 

*To get to the auditorium, please park in the parking garage located at 7th and Mulvane. From there, take the 2nd floor skywalk across to the hospital. Follow the hall to the end and turn right. 

Bonding with Your Baby 

Learn techniques that will help build a stronger bond with your baby. These include infant massage, an introduction to baby sign language, "wearing"/carrying your baby, and developmental play activities to do together. Grandparents may attend also at no fee

To find the classroom, park in the parking garage located off 7th and Mulvane. Take the second floor skywalk across to the lobby area. Follow the signs that will direct you to the class.

Boot Camp for New Dads

This class enables expectant fathers to gain confidence in their new role, before bringing their baby home. Hands-on practice of baby care skills is a highlight of the class, taught by veteran fathers. Pizza slices and sodas will be available for a light dinner at no cost.

Childbirth Preparation

Prepare for the birth of your child by learning about labor, delivery and the tools and techniques available to you. A tour of the NewLife Center will be included. We recommend you take this class before the 36th week of pregnancy.

Great Expectations Sibling Class

This class helps prepare children becoming a big brother or sister with the changes a new baby may bring. Activities include viewing a short DVD, touring the NewLife Center and a light snack. Parent or adult family member must attend with child(ren). Please enroll each child and include their age and gender. There is no fee for additional children.

Infant & Child CPR

This course teaches choking, rescue breathing, and AED to parents, grandparents, safe sitters and community members. Instructors are certified through the American Heart Association. This is the friends and family class. Registration is free for parents delivering at St. Francis, as well as safe sitter graduates.

Prenatal Breastfeeding Class

Learn breastfeeding basics, benefits and pumping information. Learn how to get breastfeeding off to a great start and how to avoid common problems. Grandparents are welcome to attend at no cost with the enrollment of an expectant parent.

Continued Care Exercise Classes

Aqua Lite - A shallow water workout that is easy to follow, easy on the joints and easy to access with ramp or stairs with handrail. At Great Life at the YWCA, 225 SW 12th Ave. Call 888-365-0440 to register.

Every Tuesday and Thursday from 11:15 a.m. to Noon at the YWCA 

Big Moves - A whole body fitness class that focuses on putting big effort into every movement. Improve balance, coordination and endurance.

Wednesdays at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Health Sports Medicine Clinic

Cardio Express - Challenge yourself with fat burning intervals of strength and cardio for a total body workout.

Mondays at Noon at St. Francis Health Sports Medicine Clinic

Fridays at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Health Sports Medicine Clinic 

Strength Basics - Learn basic resistance training using hand weights and specific slow repetitions to build strength in upper body, lower body and core as recommended by NIH & ACSM. Can be performed in a chair, as needed.

Tuesdays at 2:15 p.m. at St. Francis Health Family Medicine at Hunter's Ridge

Thursdays at 9 a.m. at St. Francis Health Sports Medicine Clinic

Yoga Gold - Learn yoga techniques to help you relax the mind and body, and improve strength and balance. Open to all levels, but geared for ages 60+. Can be performed in chairs and may include meditation.

Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Health Sports Medicine Clinic

Yoga Pink - Designed for moms and babies and moms-to-be, but all ages are welcome. All students encouraged to practice at their own level.

Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. at St. Francis Health Family Medicine at Hunter's Rdige

Yoga Rx - Gentle yoga focusing on relaxation, breathing and alignment practices which can decrease pain and alleviate many stress induced symptoms. Participants may bring their own yoga mat.

Wednesdays at 2:15 p.m. at St. Francis Health Sports Medicine Clinic

Yoga Works -  Increase strength, flexibility, balance and stamina. Beginners welcome but should consult instructor for proper modifications.

Senior Spirit Classes

Exercise in a safe group environment at our Sports Medicine Clinic conveniently located at 801 SW Fairlawn in Topeka. The classes are provided at no cost to you and there are a variety of classes to accommodate your needs.

Cardio Class - Music and movement increase your cardiac endurance.

Mondays and Fridays at 11:15 a.m. at St. Francis Health Sports Medicine Clinic

Chair Class - Teaches you proper body alignment to improve balance, promotes flexibility, coordination, strength and stress management with breathing techniques to help lower blood pressure. This class is adaptable to a variety of fitness levels and physical abilities. All levels are welcome to attend. Attendance is free for ages 65+.

Combo Class - This class includes a combination of cardio, strength, and stretch.

Teen/Babysitting

Safe Sitter 

This course is a nationally recognized program that teaches adolescents how to handle emergencies, how to play and redirect children with developmentally appropriate activities. Students will learn how to handle babysitting as a business.This class is for ages 11 to 14 years old. Parents or grandparents may attend the class for $25. Please call 888.365.0440 to register.
