St. Francis Health Emergency Department Project Reaches Milestone

ER Staff Will Begin Utilizing Newly-Renovated Space This Week

Topeka, KAN. – Finishing touches are being made to Phase II of the St. Francis Health Emergency Department renovation project, and staff will begin using the new space on Wednesday, May 14. Included in Phase II renovations were a new public entrance and patient registration/waiting area, as well as additional exam rooms.

“We are excited to complete Phase II of this project,” said Paul Leavens, St. Francis Health Emergency Department Director. “The new rooms provide much needed space. They are designed to be warm and comforting for our patients, as well as efficient for our staff.”

The three-phase project includes a complete, $10-million dollar renovation of the St. Francis Health Emergency Department. When completed later this year, the renovated department will feature 20,000 additional square feet of space, including expanded trauma care, a new “senior care” area and major cardiac/chest pain care facilities. There will be a special focus on increased efficiencies and decreased wait times.

“With the completion of Phase I a few months ago, we have already seen improvement in patient wait times,” Leavens said. “We expect that to improve even more with the utilization of the new Phase II space, and are looking forward to realizing the full benefits of this renovation when it is completed later this year.”
Phase I of the project was completed and became operational in November 2013. The project, which broke ground in March 2013, is slated for completion in mid-2014.
