Inpatient Care

The Inpatient Rehabilitation Program, which is the only accredited inpatient rehabilitation facility in the Topeka service area, assists patients recovering from strokes, motor vehicle accidents, head and spinal injuries, surgeries, neurological disorders and other situations that limit the ability of individuals to perform daily living activities.

Patients and their families are an integral part of the interdisciplinary treatment team. Other team members are included according to the needs of the individual patient, but may include physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, case managers, social workers, recreation therapists, nurses, psychologists and physiatrists (physicians specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation). This team develops a plan to guide, motivate and support the patient through his or her transition to the highest level of functioning possible.

The Inpatient Rehabilitation Program is conveniently located within St. Francis Health Center. This location provides a safety net for patients, with response from in-house emergency physicians available 24 hours a day. The 36-bed size of the Inpatient Program also allows patients the opportunity to interact closely with each other during meals and community outings. Patients obtain a large amount of one-to-one treatment time with their therapist and/or nurse, which helps ensure a safe and secure environment.

Easy Street

Easy Street is an area equipped with fit-to-scale replicas of local businesses and common community settings so that patients can practice routine activities such as pumping gas, transferring in and out of a car, shopping for groceries and conducting banking transactions. This feature, combined with a transitional living apartment, gives patients and their families the opportunity to face everyday challenges with the support of the treatment team so the patient can make a smooth transition to the community.
